What Is the SEAI EV Charger Grant?

The SEAI Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant provides €300 towards the cost of purchasing and installing a home EV charger. Administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, it's designed to make the transition to electric vehicles more affordable for Irish homeowners.

Unlike some other grants, the SEAI charger grant is a flat €300 — not "up to €300". Every eligible applicant receives the same amount, regardless of installation costs.

Who Is Eligible?

The good news is that most Irish homeowners qualify. Here's what you need:

  • A private home in Ireland — houses, townhouses, and some duplexes qualify
  • Off-street parking — a driveway, garage, or designated parking space
  • An SEAI-approved charger — must be on the approved product list
  • One grant per property — not per person, per property

You don't need to own an electric vehicle. Many homeowners install a charger before purchasing their EV, and you're fully eligible to do so.

How Much Will You Save?

With Volt Éire's all-inclusive €1,299 installation package, your costs break down simply:

  • Installation cost: €1,299 (charger + installation + materials)
  • SEAI grant: -€300
  • Your net cost: €999

There are no hidden fees. The price includes the charger, all electrical work, materials, and SEAI grant paperwork.

How to Apply

Option 1: Let Volt Éire Handle It (Recommended)

This is the easiest path. When you apply through Volt Éire:

  1. Complete our online assessment (10-15 minutes)
  2. We prepare and submit your SEAI application
  3. SEAI approves (typically same day)
  4. We install your charger
  5. You receive €300 from SEAI

We handle all the paperwork — you just need to sign the application.

Option 2: Apply Directly Through SEAI

You can also apply directly through the SEAI portal. You'll need:

  • Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number — 11 digits, starting with 10, found on your electricity bill)
  • Your Eircode
  • Details of your chosen SEAI-approved charger
  • A registered electrical contractor for installation

What Is an MPRN and Where Do I Find It?

Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is an 11-digit number starting with 10 that uniquely identifies your electricity meter. You'll find it:

  • On your electricity bill — usually in the top-right area
  • On your ESB meter — printed on the meter itself

You'll need this for the SEAI grant application. When you apply through Volt Éire, we can extract your MPRN from a photo of your electricity bill.

How Long Does Approval Take?

SEAI typically processes applications the same day when all details are correct. In some cases it may take a few business days if additional information is needed.

Important Things to Know

  • Grants can change. Government grants are reviewed periodically. The current €300 grant has been in place for several years, but there's no guarantee it will continue indefinitely.
  • One grant per property. If a grant has already been claimed on your property, you can't apply again.
  • Renters can apply with landlord permission.
  • The charger must be installed by a registered electrical contractor — all Volt Éire installers are Safe Electric certified.
