Common pre-approval reason

Fuse Board Upgrade for EV Charger Installation

Not every home needs a fuse board upgrade before an EV charger goes in. We check your consumer unit from photos first, then tell you whether your installation can stay standard or needs electrical work before booking.

Older fuse board that may need review before an EV charger installation

When an EV charger may need a fuse board upgrade

A home charger needs its own dedicated circuit and suitable protection. If the existing board is modern, labelled, and has capacity, the charger can often be installed without changing it. If the board is old or unclear, we arrange pre-approval before you commit.

  • Older rewireable fuses instead of modern circuit breakers
  • No spare ways for a dedicated EV charger circuit
  • Missing or unclear RCD/RCBO protection
  • Burn marks, cracked casing, loose covers, or exposed conductors
  • No clear main switch or unclear labelling
  • Previous DIY additions or mixed old and new wiring

How Volt Éire handles it

  1. 1

You upload a fuse board photo

Open the consumer unit cover and take a straight-on photo showing every breaker and label. We also check your meter, earthing, bonding, parking, and cable route.

  2. 2

A Safe Electric electrician reviews it

We check whether the board can safely take a dedicated EV circuit and whether the existing protective devices are suitable.

  3. 3

We confirm standard install or pre-approval

If your board is suitable, your installation stays at €1,299 all-in. If not, we quote the upgrade before you book.

  4. 4

Upgrade and charger install are coordinated

Where an upgrade is needed, the electrical work is specified by a registered electrician and coordinated with your charger installation.

Fuse board upgrades and EV charger circuits must be designed and certified by a Safe Electric registered electrician. We do not guess from a single photo; we use photos to decide whether a proper electrical review is needed.

Fuse board upgrade FAQ

Do all EV charger installations need a fuse board upgrade?
No. Most modern Irish homes do not need a fuse board upgrade. You are more likely to need one if the board is old, has no spare capacity, lacks suitable protection, or cannot safely support a dedicated EV charger circuit.
How much does a fuse board upgrade cost for an EV charger in Ireland?
It depends on the existing board, protection, supply arrangement, and the electrician’s specification. Volt Éire checks your photos first and quotes any required upgrade before you book, so you are not guessing from a generic price range.
Can an EV charger be connected to an old fuse board?
Only if a Safe Electric registered electrician confirms the existing board and protection are suitable. Older boards often need upgrading before a charger can be connected safely and certified.
Is a fuse board upgrade covered by the SEAI home charger grant?
The SEAI home charger grant is a flat €300 grant for eligible home charger installations. Any required fuse board upgrade is additional electrical work and is quoted separately if your home needs it.
