How do I apply?

What information do I need to provide?

You'll need your Eircode, MPRN (top-right of your electricity bill, 11 digits starting with 10), plus photos of your fuseboard, ESB meter, electricity bill, proposed charger location, and any visible earth rod/earthing and bonding details. Our online assessment guides you through capturing everything we need.

Do I need off-street parking?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Off-street parking is a requirement for the SEAI grant and for safe installation. The charger is typically mounted on an external wall adjacent to where you park.

Question 5

Can I get a charger installed if I rent my home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you'll need written permission from your landlord before proceeding. The SEAI grant is available for rented properties as long as the other eligibility criteria are met.

Can I get a charger installed in an apartment?

Accepted Answer

Apartment installs need a separate review because OMC approval, meter access, cable routes, common-area rules and grant routes can differ from a standard home installation. If you have dedicated parking or need OMC approval, use our apartment EV charging enquiry route.

My home is a recent new build — is it ready for a charger?

Usually it's well set up for one. Since 1 November 2022, Irish building regulations (Part L) require new homes with off-street parking to be built EV-charger-ready — the cable route/ducting is put in so a charger can be added later. New builds also tend to have a modern fuseboard. It still goes through the same photo assessment: if there is no visible earth rod, that can be normal on newer TN-C-S/PME supplies, but our installer still has to confirm the EV charger earthing/protection arrangement before we treat it as Standard.

What is a Standard Installation?

A Standard Installation is a home EV charger job we can complete safely and predictably from your uploaded photos at our fixed all-in price of €1,299. It applies to houses with off-street parking where the existing fuseboard, meter, earthing/protection arrangement, gas/water bonding, parking and cable route are clear from your photos/video and can be certified by a Safe Electric registered electrician. Most Irish homes qualify.

Why might I need a pre-approval visit?

You need a pre-approval visit when your photos/video can't confirm Standard Installation eligibility — typically because of an older fuseboard, an indoor or prepay meter, unclear earthing or gas/water bonding, a looped ESB service, or higher household demand from a heat pump. These are checked so the installation can satisfy Safe Electric/I.S. 10101 certification, SEAI grant paperwork, and ESB Networks supply constraints where relevant. We send a Safe Electric registered electrician to take a closer look and quote any extras transparently before you commit.

What if you can't tell from my photos?

We'll ask you to retake any unclear shots first — usually the issue is a closed cabinet door or a partial view of the fuseboard. If it still isn't clear after a retake, we move you straight to a pre-approval visit. We don't proceed with installation pricing on uncertainty.

What's included in the Standard Installation?

Everything you need for a safe, certified install: the smart charger (on the SEAI Smart Charger Register), all materials, labour by a Safe Electric registered electrician, certification, and we handle your SEAI grant paperwork from start to finish. €1,299 all-in, €300 back from SEAI after installation, net cost €999.

Does the distance from my fuseboard to the charger affect the cost?

A short, simple cable run between your fuseboard and your charger is included in our €1,299 Standard Installation. Longer or more complex routes — across attics, through walls, or anything that needs ducting or trenching — may move the job out of Standard pricing and require a separate quote for the additional cabling and labour. Show your proposed route in your walkthrough video so we can confirm before you book.

Question 13

Why do you need to see my gas and water pipes?

Accepted Answer

Your installer must confirm that any required gas and water bonding is satisfactory before they certify the charger circuit. In your walkthrough video, show the gas meter if you have gas, then show the main water shut-off or stopcock. We are looking for a green/yellow safety cable clamped to those pipes. Electricians call this bonding. If you can't see the cable, show the area anyway so we can confirm whether an electrician needs to inspect it.

What if I can't find my earth rod?

Accepted Answer

The earth rod is usually a small green box flush with the ground near your ESB meter — it might be partially covered by stones, soil, or paving. Newer homes often have no local earth rod because they're earthed through the ESB supply itself; that's common, not automatically a fault. For an outdoor EV charger, though, the installer must confirm a compliant earthing/protection arrangement. If you can't locate a rod, mark it as 'not found' and add a short note. We may need a pre-approval visit, and if an earth electrode or other approved protection is required, we'll quote it transparently before you commit.

My meter or fuseboard looks old — can I still get a charger?

Accepted Answer

Possibly, but it's exactly the kind of setup we move to a pre-approval visit. ESB Networks asks us to assume an unfamiliar cut-out is unsuitable until they confirm otherwise, and a Safe Electric electrician must be able to certify the board and new EV circuit to Irish wiring rules. The visit is quick and low-cost — and if any work is needed (board upgrade, meter tails upgrade, ESB attendance), we quote it transparently before you commit.

I can't open my meter box — what do I do?

The outdoor meter cabinet opens with a standard meter-box key, and lots of homeowners have never needed one — it's not a fault, you just need the key. You can request a replacement from your electricity or gas supplier (for example Bord Gáis or ESB), or pick up an inexpensive multi-utility 'utility key' from most hardware shops. We need the cabinet cover open for the assessment so we can confirm there's no indoor or prepay meter. Please don't touch any sealed ESB Networks equipment — the key only opens the customer-side cover.

Our all-inclusive package is €1,299, which includes your charger, professional installation, and all materials. You pay upfront, and we handle your SEAI grant application. After installation, SEAI will email you a declaration to sign—then you receive €300 back within 4–6 weeks. Net cost: €999.

What is the SEAI grant and am I eligible?

The SEAI Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant provides €300 towards your charger and installation. To qualify, you need a private home with off-street parking, and the charger must be on SEAI's approved list. The grant is one per MPRN (meter point reference number), so one grant per property.

No. Our quoted price includes everything needed for a standard installation: the charger, all materials, labour, and Safe Electric certification. How long is the SEAI grant approval valid?

The SEAI Letter of Offer is valid for 6 months from the issue date. You must complete your installation and submit the grant claim within that window. We manage this timeline for you so you never miss a deadline.

We accept all major credit and debit cards. You pay when you book your installation date, before the installation takes place. This secures your slot and allows us to begin your SEAI grant application.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

On a standard electricity tariff (~€0.30/kWh), a full charge for a typical EV costs around €15-20 and gives you 300-400km of range. On a night rate (~€0.18/kWh), that drops to around €9-12. Most EV drivers spend €30-50 per month on home charging — compared to €150-250 per month on petrol. That's a saving of over €1,500 per year for the average Irish driver.

Will the charger connect to my fuseboard or the meter box?

Accepted Answer

In most homes, the charger is connected back to the fuseboard (consumer unit) with the correct isolator and protection. A meter box connection is only used in exceptional cases where a consumer unit connection isn't feasible. We confirm the safest compliant approach during your photo assessment.

What if my fuseboard needs upgrading?

If your fuseboard isn't compliant for an EV circuit, we provide a separate quote for the upgrade before proceeding — typically €350-€550 depending on board age and circuit count. Most modern homes (post-2005) don't require upgrades. We identify this during your photo assessment so there are no surprises on install day.

Do I need a 3-phase electricity supply?

No. Most Irish homes have a single-phase supply, and every charger we offer is a 7.4kW unit that works perfectly on single-phase. A 7.4kW charger will fully charge most EVs overnight (6-8 hours), which is more than enough for daily driving. 3-phase chargers (11kW or 22kW) exist but are rarely needed for home use and require a 3-phase connection from ESB Networks.

What is Safe Electric certification?

Safe Electric is the regulatory body for electrical safety in Ireland. All our installers are Safe Electric registered, which is a requirement for the SEAI grant. You receive a completion certificate after installation confirming all work meets Irish wiring regulations.

How long does it take to charge my car?

You choose your charger during sign-up. The standard unit is the BENY 7.4kW smart charger with a 5-metre tethered cable and Type 2 connector at €1,299 all-in, and upgrade options from other manufacturers — including untethered (socketed) configurations — are shown with their own fixed all-in prices when available. Every unit we offer is a 7.4kW smart charger on the SEAI register, compatible with all electric vehicles sold in Ireland, and the flat €300 grant applies whichever you choose.

Can I control my charger from my phone?

Yes. Our smart chargers come with a manufacturer app that lets you monitor usage, schedule charging sessions, and track costs from your phone.

Will the charger work during a power cut?

No. Like all home electrical appliances, the charger requires mains power to operate. Charging will resume automatically when power is restored.

What is the SEAI Smart Charger Register?

The SEAI Smart Charger Register is a list of approved EV chargers that qualify for the SEAI grant. To be eligible for the €300 grant, your charger must be on this register. All chargers we install are on the SEAI approved list, so you don't need to worry about compatibility. Smart chargers on the register must support features like scheduling, load management, and energy monitoring.

What do the lights on my charger mean?

A slow green 'breathing' light means the charger is healthy and ready; yellow and green blinking after power-up is just the self-test. A solid or flashing red light indicates a fault — the icon on the display tells you which one. Most transient faults clear if you unplug, switch the charger's breaker off for 30 seconds and back on. What is Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB)?

Dynamic Load Balancing is an optional add-on that watches your home's total electricity use through a sensor on your incoming supply. When the house is busy (shower, oven, kettle), the charger automatically slows down so your main fuse is never overloaded, then speeds back up when demand drops. It means most homes don't need a supply upgrade — and there's nothing for you to do, it's fully automatic.

Can the charger use my solar panels?

Yes — with the solar option of the Dynamic Load Balancing add-on. You can choose Pure PV mode (charge only on surplus solar, so excess power goes into your car instead of the grid), Hybrid mode (solar first, topped up with a set amount of grid power), or Full Speed mode (maximum rate regardless of solar). A Night Full Speed option charges at full rate from 8pm to 6am so the car still charges when there's no sun.

Do I need to maintain my charger?

Smart chargers require minimal maintenance. We recommend occasionally wiping down the unit and checking that the cable is free from damage. The charger can alert you via its app if any issues arise.
