EV chargers in older homes: assessment and project costs

3 min read
Updated

An older home can be a candidate for an EV charger, but the house’s age alone does not decide what electrical work is needed. Start with a registered electrical contractor’s assessment of the actual installation. Keep the charger package and any required remedial or building work clear in the written proposal.

What can you prepare safely?

Show the parking position, the proposed charger location and the visible route between them. Take photographs only from safe, accessible positions, with covers closed. Do not remove a fuse-board cover, open electrical equipment or touch wiring to obtain a photograph.

Prepare information, not DIY electrical tests
What you can provideWhat the contractor assesses
Photos of the visible meter and fuse-board enclosuresSupply arrangement, condition, capacity and protective equipment.
Parking and proposed mounting positionA suitable cable route, mounting arrangement and final design.
Known renovations and other large electrical loadsHow the proposed charger fits the installation and any work needed first.

Does an older house automatically need a new fuse board?

A photograph or construction date cannot settle that question. Ask the contractor to explain the findings and specify any required work. Avoid accepting either a blanket promise that no upgrade is needed or a blanket assumption that every older board must be replaced.

For the wider process, read our fuse-board assessment guide. Keep the assessment and design with a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor; this guide is a preparation checklist, not a wiring specification.

How should you budget for the job?

Begin with the current installed price for your selected charger and check what Standard Installation includes. Ask for a separate description and price for any work outside that scope before authorising it.

  • Confirm which charger and configuration are included.
  • Ask whether the proposed route is within the standard scope.
  • Identify any remedial electrical work and who will complete it.
  • Separate building work or reinstatement from the charger installation.
  • Check testing, certification and handover in the agreed scope.

Do not use an invented allowance for every older home. The useful comparison is the complete written scope for your property. Explain any renovation timetable early so the contractor can review the route before finishes are closed.

What if the parking space is away from the house?

Photograph the full route and explain access constraints. Ask the contractor to design the route and state who handles any excavation or reinstatement. Do not select a cable size, dig a trench or order electrical materials from a generic online example.

If you have been told the property has a shared or looped supply, pass that information on before booking. Ask the contractor whether the proposal needs coordination with ESB Networks. Do not treat charger software as a substitute for resolving a supply issue.

When should you deal with the grant?

The SEAI Home Charger Grant provides up to €300 subject to eligibility and the scheme’s requirements. SEAI says not to start work before the start date on the Letter of Offer. Check the offer and current claim requirements before committing to the installation date.

Keep the offer, agreed scope and completion documents together. Do not budget on a promised payment date: the grant is a separate claim, not an automatic deduction from every invoice. Our grant guide explains the customer process.

What should you do next?

Start a Volt Éire assessment with safe photographs, your parking position and any known renovation or supply issue. Use the installation checklist to prepare for the discussion and keep unresolved questions visible before authorising work.

Check your home for installation

€1,299 after the €300 SEAI grant (€1,599 payable upfront). Start with your property details, then add photos and a short walkthrough video. We check the installation scope and confirm the price before payment. You can save your progress and come back.
