EV charger load management can reduce or pause charging as household demand changes. The contractor must first assess the supply and installation and commission an appropriate limit. Ohme Home Pro is one option; installed dynamic load balancing is included across our charger range.
Is Maximum Import Capacity the same as the main fuse rating?
No. Maximum Import Capacity (MIC) is the connection capacity agreed with ESB Networks. A service-fuse label describes a protective device and does not establish the agreed capacity or the safe operating limit for the complete installation. See ESB Networks’ home technology checks.
A 7.4 kW single-phase charger can draw about 32 A at full output, but the installer must assess household demand, cables, earthing, bonding and protection together. Do not change an app or installer current limit based only on a fuse label.
What does dynamic load balancing actually do?
Monitoring measures demand so a correctly commissioned system can allocate available capacity to the charger. Charging can slow or pause while a shower, heating system or other load operates, then resume as capacity becomes available. It cannot guarantee uninterrupted full output, cure defective wiring or remove a required ESB Networks review.
The car’s minimum charging current and AC limit also affect operation. If the installation pauses charging for capacity reasons, raising a setting is not an appropriate remedy.
What does Ohme Home Pro add?
Home Pro offers a charger display and an attached 5 m or 8 m Type 2 cable. The Ohme app plans around entered tariff information, the charging target and ready-by time. Automatic tariff and vehicle integrations depend on compatibility. See the Ohme charging-routine guide and Home Pro owner guidance.
It is not essential for every home. BENY, ePod, GLO and Pulsar Max have different cable, control, connectivity and solar characteristics. Compare all installed options; do not treat load balancing as exclusive to one model.
Will load management accommodate a future heat pump or second EV?
Ask for a new demand and connection review when adding major equipment. Sharing a fixed capacity may reduce the charging energy available before departure. A second charger can need coordinated controls, additional circuit work or a capacity change. A future addition is not automatically covered by the current design.
What happens before installation?
- Provide property details and safely visible photos; record unknown supply information rather than guessing.
- The contractor clarifies any site visit, connection review or remedial work needed.
- Confirm equipment, scope and price before payment. Photos cannot reveal every defect.
- The installer commissions monitoring and performs inspection, tests and certification.
The SEAI Home Charger Grant uses the Smart Charger Register. Check the exact equipment and your applicant, property and parking eligibility. Obtain approval before eligible expenditure or work starts, then complete the installation and claim within the offer period. A listed charger does not guarantee approval. Our packages show the upfront price separately from the conditional €300 refund.
If you want a private-home installation, start assessment. If you are planning several chargers or shared parking, use the business enquiry so permissions and site capacity are reviewed together.
