Ohme ePod & Smart Tariffs: Maximising EV Charging Savings in Ireland

Charging an electric vehicle on a standard 24-hour flat electricity rate in Ireland can cost over three times as much per kilowatt-hour compared to a dedicated EV smart tariff. Shifting your charging load to off-peak hours reduces strain on the national grid and significantly lowers your household electricity bill. Achieving these reductions requires a smart meter, a compatible electricity plan, and a charger capable of communicating with your supplier's pricing data.

Which EV charging rates are the cheapest in Ireland?

The lowest electricity rates available to domestic customers are Time-of-Use (ToU) tariffs, specifically those designed for EV owners. These plans offer heavily discounted rates during off-peak night hours, typically between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. To access these rates, your property must have a smart meter installed and activated for half-hourly data logging, as regulated by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).

Because electricity suppliers frequently update their rates, you should compare the whole household bill, including standing charges, day rates, and peak rate windows (usually 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM), rather than just looking at the EV charging rate. You can review the best electricity plans for EV owners to see current market offerings. For those on older meters, understanding night rate EV charging benefits is the first step toward transitioning to a smart ToU plan.

How does the Ohme ePod integrate with Irish smart tariffs?

The Ohme ePod connects directly to your electricity supplier's API (Application Programming Interface) or uses pre-set tariff schedules to automate your charging sessions. When you input your specific electricity plan into the Ohme app, the charger calculates exactly when to draw power to meet your target battery level at the lowest possible cost.

This integration is a primary reason why SEAI requires smart chargers for grant eligibility. By automatically pausing charging during expensive peak hours and resuming when the rate drops, the ePod removes the need for manual calculations. For a broader look at maximising your home charger's potential, scheduling is the single most effective tool.

Which EV charger is better for me, the Ohme Home Pro or the Ohme ePod?

Both units share the same internal smart charging software and API integration capabilities, but they differ in physical design and user interface. For a deeper dive, read our full Ohme Home Pro vs. ePod comparison.

How do you set up an Ohme ePod for maximum savings?

To ensure your ePod charges at the lowest rates, you must configure the Ohme app correctly. First, select your exact electricity supplier and tariff from the app's menu. If your specific tariff is not listed, you can manually create a custom price schedule matching your supplier's rate windows.

Next, set your charging target (e.g., "Add 60% by 07:00 AM"). The app will calculate the required charging time and schedule the session to occur entirely within your cheapest rate window. Why won't my Ohme charger charge my car to 100%?

A common issue reported by EV owners is waking up to a car that hasn't reached its target charge. This usually stems from one of three configuration conflicts:

  • Price Caps: If you have enabled a "Price Cap" in the Ohme app, the charger will stop delivering power once the electricity rate exceeds your set limit, even if the car isn't fully charged.
  • Vehicle API Sync Issues: If Ohme is linked directly to your car manufacturer's app, a lost connection can cause the charger to underestimate the required charging time. Disconnecting the car API and relying on "dumb" percentage targets in the Ohme app often resolves this.
  • In-Car Limits: Many EVs have internal settings that cap charging at 80% to preserve battery health. The charger cannot override the vehicle's internal software limit.

How much does an Ohme ePod cost in Ireland?

At Volt Éire, our standard installation package starts from €1,599 all-in. This standard package includes a Beny 7.4 kW (model BCP-A2N-P) tethered Type 2 charger. For eligible customers, this reduces to €1,299 net after the €300 SEAI grant. The Ohme ePod is available as an upgrade unit and carries its own fixed all-in price, which you can view on our competitive pricing page. You can read the latest SEAI grant details to confirm your eligibility, noting that SEAI approval must be secured before any installation work begins.

Our customer journey is straightforward: you apply online with your property details and photos, we provide an assessment, you approve the installation scope and pay an approved order, and then we arrange a confirmed installation date. You can start your smart charging journey today without any upfront payment for the initial assessment. Learn more about our seamless installation process.

All installations must comply with the current National Rules for Electrical Installations (I.S. 10101:2020+A1:2024/AC2:2025). Our Safe Electric registered installers will verify your property's earthing arrangement. If an earth rod or inspection chamber cannot be found, the installer will specify the necessary work; we do not rely on a charger's advertised PEN protection to bypass Irish earthing obligations. Additionally, the installer will check the size and condition of your meter tails. SEAI guidelines require meter tails below 16 mm² to be upgraded, and existing tails at or above 16 mm² must still be assessed for suitability with the added EV load.

  • If you own a new build, check your handover documentation for your MPRN and apply for the SEAI grant before booking your installation assessment.
  • If you live in an existing home, photograph your main fuse board, meter box, and preferred charger location to submit through our online application for an accurate scope of work.
  • If you're doing a renovation, instruct your electrical contractor to run a dedicated minimum 3x6mm² SWA cable from the distribution board to your future charger location to simplify the final installation.
